Skunk Capture & Control

The smell hit you first — strong, persistent, impossible to ignore. Then you saw the hole under the porch. Or your dog came in with its face covered in yellow secretions.

The striped skunk is a neighbour nobody wants. Its spray is detectable from 1.5 km away and lingers for weeks on surfaces and pets. But the smell isn't the only problem: the skunk is one of the main rabies vectors in Quebec. This calls for a professional — not a brave neighbour.

Why skunks require a specialized approach

The skunk isn't aggressive — it prefers to flee. But when it feels threatened (or trapped), it turns around, raises its tail and projects a spray from its anal glands that can hit a target 3–4 metres away. The goal of professional capture: avoid the spray.

Species and behaviour

  • Why it moves in under your porch The skunk looks for shelter to sleep during the day and raise its young in spring. Under porches, decks, sheds and front steps — that's the ideal habitat. It's attracted to insect larvae in the soil (you'll often see it digging your lawn at night).

Our process

  1. Remote assessment

We observe the signs (holes, tracks, smell) before approaching. Exact location and presence of young influence the strategy.

  2. Specialized capture

Traps designed specifically for skunks, with covers to minimize stress and prevent spraying. Proven technique — we have 35+ years of experience.

  3. Relocation

Safe transport to appropriate habitat, compliant with provincial regulations.

  4. Exclusion

Closing access under the porch, deck or shed. Buried mesh to prevent digging. This is the key to not reliving the problem next year.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will the skunk leave on its own in the fall?

It may leave to overwinter elsewhere, but it will return in the spring if the access isn't blocked. And skunks communicate with each other — if one found a good shelter, others will follow.

  • My dog got sprayed. What do I do?

The most effective home remedy: 3% hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + dish soap. Apply immediately, let sit 5 minutes, rinse. Don't use tomato juice (it doesn't work). Avoid the animal's eyes.

  • Is the skunk dangerous for my children?

Skunks avoid humans. The main risk is rabies — never let a child approach a skunk (especially if it's active during the day, a possible sign of illness). Call us instead.

  • Can we block the hole under the porch ourselves?

Only if you're certain no animal is inside. Trapping a skunk under your porch creates a much worse situation — a panicked animal, guaranteed spray, and potentially babies stuck inside. Let a professional check first.
